Key features of Airtable

Relational bases as easy to handle as a spreadsheet, with views, forms, automations and interfaces.

A spreadsheet that thinks like a database

Airtable looks like a spreadsheet, but each table contains typed records (text, select, date, file, checkbox…) and above all links between tables. A campaign links to its content, a piece of content to its author: the data stays consistent, with no copy-pasting.

  • Typed fields that make data entry reliable
  • Relations between tables, rollups and formulas
  • Direct import from Excel or Google Sheets

Views suited to every use

Grid, kanban, calendar, gallery, Gantt, timeline: each team views the same data in the form that speaks to them. Filtered, shared views avoid multiplying exports — the editorial calendar and production tracking live in the same base.

Connected forms

Each table can generate a public form whose responses feed directly into the base: content briefs, request collection, event registration. Combined with automations, this creates collection circuits with no re-entry.

Automations and interfaces

Triggers (new record, changed status, date reached) and actions (email, Slack, record creation, script) automate internal flows. Interface Designer turns the base into a small custom app: content approval, client tracking portal, production dashboard.

Integrations and AI

Slack, Gmail, Drive, Jira, Make, Zapier and a very clean API: Airtable integrates everywhere. The AI features (summaries, categorisation, extraction) are added field by field, useful for processing volume without a script.

Strengths and limits

Our honest verdict after many Airtable foundations built for our clients.

What we like
  • Relational bases accessible to non-developers
  • Multiple, shareable views of the same data
  • Built-in forms and automations
  • Interface Designer to build real small applications
  • Solid API and Make/Zapier integrations
What may hold you back
  • A marked price jump between free and the Team plan
  • You have to learn to think "relational" to get the most out of it
  • Per-editor pricing that gets costly for large teams
  • Less suited to large volumes than a real database
THE AGENCY VERDICT

Our review of Airtable

Airtable is the tool we pull out when a spreadsheet is no longer enough: genuinely structured relational bases, multiple views, forms and automations make it an ideal backbone for an editorial calendar, a production pipeline or an asset base. The price jump between the free plan and the Team plan is brutal, and newcomers take a little while to think "relational". Well designed — that's our job — an Airtable foundation is a clear upgrade on half a dozen contradicting spreadsheets.
